At ETH Zurich, seeing the future take shape

Spending the afternoon at ETH Zurich for a hands on workshop with Gramazio Kohler Research.

Our recent visit to ETH Zurich was nothing short of inspiring. Inside the 3D printing farm and the Robotic Fabrication Lab, we witnessed architecture and robotics merge in full scale. Four ABB robots moved seamlessly across an overhead gantry — an extraordinary display of precision and coordination that felt more like choreography than construction.

One highlight was learning about COMPAS, an open-source, Python-based framework developed at ETH. It connects computational design, geometric modelling, robotic fabrication, and data exchange between digital tools — bringing the digital and physical worlds closer together.

Within this ecosystem, COMPAS Timber stood out. It enables digital design and robotic fabrication of timber structures, turning even the most complex wooden geometries into precisely crafted, sustainable realities. We discussed wood’s many strengths — its renewability, lightness, and natural carbon-storing ability — and how these qualities align perfectly with our approach to sustainable construction.

At Pansanté, exploration and learning are part of our DNA. Developing advanced healthcare concepts means constantly researching, testing, and reimagining what’s possible. Every project adds to our understanding — and this visit reinforced the power of curiosity and collaboration in driving innovation.

This experience was part of our engagement in the Swiss Network for Ukraine, a platform dedicated to sharing knowledge and ideas for rebuilding resilient infrastructure.

A heartfelt thank you to the ETH Zurich team for their generosity and for opening the doors to such an extraordinary space. We left inspired, motivated, and full of ideas for the future.

New study for a hospital in Faro Portugal

We look forward to continue our work on this study in 2023

Together with Potthoff Engineers and Transsolar, we have presented a concept in Portugal that enables an energy-neutral operation of a hospital. The local conditions are good and we optimized the modular concept to the existing situation.

By developing and validating innovative climate and energy concepts for high comfort and low energy buildings, we recognize that design is influenced by all aspects of environmental conditions. We collaboratively work with the client and other consultants from the beginning of the design process, using fundamental thermodynamics to consider each step. This generates a climate concept in which form, material, and mechanical systems are synergistic components of a well orchestrated climate control system, and conversely an environmental control strategy that is integral to the architectural concept with a minimum of energy and water use. Our design can be totally self sufficient (Net Zero) Our use of SROI (Sustainable Return On Investment) allows us to optimize the cost/benefit strategies used in our design.

What is different in our hospital approach?

Better use of space, less energy and collecting water are key elements in rethinking healthcare design. The running cost of a traditional hospital overtakes the building cost in just 5 years. Functional "western thoughts“ of perfect work-flow contradict the natural climate and create unsustainable facilities in terms of operating costs, as well as ignoring the needs of local communities. This led us to the conclusion that "net zero“ energy and water harvested on-site have to be fundamental in an advanced concept.
